What a gift it is to be able to study Proverbs together! We have absolutely loved learning the ways of wisdom as a community and this chapter is PACKED with practical advice for living a life of peace, joy, honesty, and fruitfulness.
How’s your heart today? Maybe there is something in your life today that has you entangled in a web, leaving you feeling hopeless. Friend, if that is you, we want you to know that you are never too far gone for Jesus to welcome you back. He sees you and everything you have done, and still adores you. Better yet, He wants to be a part of your life and actually provide for you a way out. Ask Him to speak to you today through this chapter and guide you into His arms.

Now let’s dive in!
Verse 1 (TPT): “To learn the truth you must long to be teachable or you can despise correction and remain ignorant.”
What do you long for? We all have a desire for something. Maybe it is a certain appearance you are trying to achieve, and specific relationship, or that accomplishment at work. To long for something is to hold it at the top of the list and to give it most of your time, attention, and emotional energy.
So what is at the top of your longings? Here in verse 1, Solomon is saying that our longing should be teachability. Aka—we should be hungry to grow in what is true.
Paul tell is in Philippians 4:8, “Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.”
If you want to grow, start asking Jesus for a longing of the above, for He will give you the desires of your heart.
Verse 9: “Just be who you are and work hard for a living, for that’s better than pretending to be important and starving to death.”
Isn’t it so true that we all want to be important people? We try and figure out what the world wants from us to be seen as valuable, and then we change who we are and lose ourselves just to gain mans approval. But the truth is, we already are called valuable and important by the greatest opinion.
This verse is telling us that we are allowed to just be who God created us to be and that will be enough. No more, no less.
Here’s a fun exercise, write down some features about yourself and then next to it, write the word ENOUGH. Thank God for how He created you and praise Him what who he has made you to be.
Verse 18: “Reckless words are like the thrusts of a sword, cutting remarks meant to stab and to hurt.”
Have you ever blurted out something without thinking through it and then immediately wished you could take it back? You are not alone! Often times, it is even towards the people that we love the most.
James, the brother of Jesus, tell us that our tongue (our words) is one of the most powerful forces on the planet. He says that “the tongue is a fire” spreading like wildfire by the smallest flame.
That is why he tells us a few verses later in James 1 to be quick to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger. Don’t know about you, but this makes us realize our HUGE need for Jesus. Jesus is the key to having this discipline of slowness of speech.
Verse 20: “Deception fills the hearts of those who plot harm, but those who plan for peace are filled with joy.”
This is such an insightful comparison!
Plan for Deception= Harm
Plan for Peace=Joy
What are you planning for today? Start your day and ask God how you can actually plan for peace! Ask for opportunities to bring peace to yourself and those around you. We can promise you that at the end of today you will feel such abundant joy that is not of this world!
Verse 25: “Anxious fear brings depression, but a life-giving word of encouragement can do wonders to restore joy to the heart.”
What a timely verse! Anxiety, fear, and depression are running rampant in our culture today. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that each year approximately one million people die from suicide, which represents a global mortality rate of 16 people per 100,000 or one death every 40 seconds. It is predicted that by 2020 the rate of death will increase to one every 20 seconds.
This is a devastating statistic driven by anxiety and depression. As we look to 2020 and the statistic that the death rate will increase, we can see how we can get involved to bring light into the darkness. Check it out: “A life-giving word of encouragement can do wonders to restore joy to the heart.”
The solution is encouragement and life-giving words! Who is someone you can encourage today? Who is someone you can go out of your way to reach out to? Never ignore that pressing on your heart to reach out that specific person. They could be gong through something you know nothing about but God might want to use you to restore joy to their heart!
Verse 28: “Abundant life is discovered by walking in righteousness, but holding on to your anger leads to death.”
Spend some time today really, truly thinking through this question: Is there any resentment, bitterness, or unforgiveness in your life you are holding on to today?
According to this verse, Solomon is saying that the thing that holds us back from abundant life, aka a fulfilling life, is holding on to anger.
Friend, maybe you’ve really been hurt by something or someone. We will never take away from the real pain that you might be walking through because of this broken world. But holding resentment in your heart will only hold you back from freedom and healing. And God, our sweet, loving, and attentive Father, has such bigger plans for you.
Someone wise once said, “Resentment is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die.”
We want you to experience this freedom, this abundant life, mentioned here. Forgiveness and letting go of your anger might be what will free you today.
We want to ask you again after reading this, how’s your heart today? Maybe God is telling you to confess something to a trusted friend. Or maybe he is asking you to give a word of encouragement to someone specific to fight anxiety and fear. Or He may be calling you near to walk you through a prayer of forgiveness for the injustice that has been done to you. Regardless, we hope He has spoken specifically to you during this time!

Okay, now we’re excited. Let’s dive in!
Verse 1 (TPT): “To set high standards for someone else, and then not live up to them yourself, is something that God truly hates. But it pleases him when we apply the right standards of measurement.”
Have you ever been just urked (I know it’s not a word, but we’re making it one here) by something someone was doing?
Committing and following through is something that is really important to me. One time I was a part of a small group of friends that agreed to meet every Tuesday night to study and grow together in community. There were a few nights that I knew couldn’t make it to group so I let the group know that I wouldn’t be going those nights. After one of the weeks I missed, some of the others in the group texted, last second, and said they weren’t going to be there for certain reasons. I’m not going to lie, in that moment, I was really urked! Didn’t we make a commitment to make this a priority in our weekly rhythm? Don’t they know that in order to have a discussion and grow together, we all need to be there? And then it dawned on me, I had done the exact same thing RIGHT before they did it (hate it when that happens!).
Solomon is warning us here to not get caught up in the “high standard’s” game. The truth is, we shouldn’t be putting high standards on those around us or even ourselves, if those standards are not the standards Jesus sets for us. When Solomon refers to the “right standard of measurement”, as you may be able to guess, he means God’s standards. And friends, when we see each other through a lens of Jesus (covered by grace), we have a Father who is SO pleased with us.
Verse 5: “Those with good character walk on a smooth path, with no detour or deviation. But the wicked keep falling because of their own wickedness.”
Has anyone seen those interesting (or should I say odd) videos of people feeling different textures? As strange as it is, the textures that most people are drawn to watching are the smooth ones. It’s oddly soothing to the soul and it’s proven to help people with stress lower their anxiety levels. There is something to that!
In this verse, good character is equated with a “smooth path.” And if I’ve learned anything about textures, smooth or, getting to smooth, isn’t always easy, but it should always accompany peace. Here’s another way to think about it. When you are driving down a rough and bumpy road, you will get to your destination, but it will not be peaceful. If you take the smoother road, you’ll get there and have a peaceful ride. Do you feel peace on your path? If not, ask God to examine your heart and your character, that He may point it out the way for you to find a smooth path and lead you down the smooth path of everlasting life.
Verse 9: “The teachings of hypocrites can destroy you, but revelation knowledge will rescue the righteous.”
Okay! I love the language of “revelation knowledge” here! Have you ever had a revelation from God? A revelation is defined as “a surprising and previously unknown fact”. Meaning that God has facts, aka spiritual truths, that He wants to show you right now! And it is not only for the “spiritually elite” (as if that is even a thing) that He saves revelation! We see the qualification for revelation in the verse: righteousness! Want to know if you are righteous? Check it out:
“But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed.” Isaiah 53:5 (ESV)
His wounds = Our righteousness. Rest in that today!
Verse 10: “The blessing that rests on the righteous releases strength and favor to the entire city, but shouts of joy will be heard when the wicked one dies.”
I have heard favor described as seeing things happen in your life that only God could get the credit for. When we seek Him, we see his favor play out in ways that will affect you, your family, your community, and even your entire city. So, friend, don’t be afraid to ask for favor! The spiritual blessing and revival that could come from that could be bigger than your wildest dreams.
Verse 12: “To quarrel with a neighbor is senseless. Bite your tongue; be wise and keep quiet!”
In a world full of opinions, doesn’t it actually (almost) physically hurt when you try and keep your mouth shut when you are upset? What a weird feeling! I have a rule. If I am emotionally charged about something that I want to speak into, I try my hardest to not speak. Rocket science, right?! No. Truth is, I’ve never come out on top when I prematurely speak out when I am frustrated. And even the thought that there is a winner and a loser to an argument shows that you will probably lose! In God’s family, there should never be a winner or a loser, for we are not each other enemies.
Friends, we have a very real enemy who will tempt us to use our tongues for evil and tear the family of God away from unity, peace, and kingdom work. Don’t disqualify yourself from letting God fight FOR you. If you literally have to bite your tongue, do it! Be slow to speak, slow to become angry, and quick to listen and forgive.
Verse 24: “Generosity brings prosperity, but withholding from charity brings poverty.”
The message here: give, give, give. And when you think you have given A LOT, give some more! Of your time, your resources, your love, your encouragement, and your life. When we give first from what we have, we commit the remainder to God and we hold it with open hands. Then, it becomes a joy to steward what we have well. I LOVE when the bible uses words like prosperity, blessings, and revelation because it doesn’t mean worldly prosperity or riches like so many others think of when thinking of a “good life”; it means something so much better. Paul says in Philippians 4:11-12 while in prison:
“I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content. I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need.” (ESV)
Paul got it! He gave of his whole life and left the rest up to God. Even in the scarcity, he lived with abundance.
Verse 28: “Keep trusting in your riches and down you’ll go! But the lovers of God rise up like flowers in the spring.”
God requires one thing for us to flourish like a flower in direct sunlight planted in good soil: simply to be a lover of Him. Do you love him? If you want to love him, I encourage you to first know Him. To know him you need to be planted (get it?!) in His word. And what an encouraging thing this is! By reading this verse, this study, you are currently in good soil! You are right where He wants you to be, friend.
Verse 30: “But a life lived loving God bears lasting fruit, for the one who is truly wise wins souls.”
How sweet that our Father allows us to participate in “winning souls” to Himself just by being found in Him. Just by loving Him, you will bear fruit that lasts. I hope you see yourself as a child with a good Dad today! Let’s pray.
“God, I thank you that you call us to a life of bearing lasting fruit and winning souls back to you. May we continue to rise like flowers in the spring as we simply love you. I pray that we would be a generous people knowing that every time we give anything, we are being a reflection of the One who truly gave it all. Father, please allow us to strive for unity with our people around us as we discern when to speak, when to listen, and when to wait. Would you give us revelation knowledge as we walk on the smooth path that you have cleared for us? Allow us to not measure the lives around us that lead to cynicism and disunity but allow us to walk and focus on our hearts being pure before you. Thank you for being the ultimate standard and, by that, covering us in your sweet, sweet, grace. Amen”

Who is ready for Proverbs 10?!
Get excited about this word, because it is good! Some of you may know that I have a podcast called, Whoa, That’s Good!. The concept of the podcast is to ask influential people this question, “What is the best piece of advice you have ever been given, and how did it shape who you are and what you do?” I feel like chapter 10 of Proverbs is a Whoa, That’s Good episode with Solomon, because everything is so good! There are actually so many good one-liner-lessons in this chapter that I decided it would be more like putting some important tools in your toolbox, as my bible study leader used to say, than a one topic lesson. Each verse in this chapter speaks for itself. Let’s dive in!
Verse 2 (TPT): “Gaining wealth through dishonesty is no gain at all. But honesty brings you a lasting happiness.”
I was in an uber once and could tell the guy who was driving me was upset. I ended up getting into a conversation with him where he told me that he is the emptiest person I will ever meet. I asked him why he felt like that way and he began to share his story. He said, “I thought if I moved away from my family and made money then I would be happy. Now, I have more money than I ever thought I would have, but I am emptier than I have ever been.” This is a guy who moved away from everything in search for happiness through money and ended up with nothing. I think that uber driver is a prime example of who this verse is speaking too. I’m not saying he earned his money dishonestly, but he learned that money doesn’t bring happiness.
Verses 4-5: “Slackers will know what it means to be poor, while the hard worker becomes wealthy. Know the importance of the season you’re in and a wise son you will be. But what a waste when an incompetent son sleeps through his day of opportunity!”
Here is a link to a sermon I preached called Don’t Waste The Waiting. It is echoing all that this verse is saying. Sometimes, in expectation of what we want God to do in our future season, we sit down in the season we are currently in. It is SO important we do not get lazy. God has so much He can teach you RIGHT WHERE YOU ARE and those are the things that will prepare you for what is to come.
Verse 9: “The one who walks in integrity will experience a fearless confidence in life, but the one who is devious will eventually be exposed.”
My mom told us when Duck Dynasty started not to hide anything, for hidden things carry the danger of exposure. Whether what we were trying to hide was ever exposed or we constantly worried that it would be exposed, life would be miserable. Either way is not a fun way to live. My mom’s advice and this verse, I can say from personal experience, hold true! I have been able to experience, and even write about, living with a fearless confidence by living honestly and authentically – not perfect – but with integrity. The definition of integrity is the state of being whole and undivided. When you chose a path and walk into it wholeheartedly (again not perfect, but honest) a sense of confidence follows.
Verse 12: “Hatred keeps old quarrels alive, but love draws a veil over every insult and finds a way to make sin disappear.” Verse 17-19: “If you readily receive correction, you are walking on the path to life. But if you reject rebuke, you’re guaranteed to go astray. The one who hides his hatred while pretending to be your friend is nothing but a liar. But the one who slanders you behind your back proves that he’s a fool, never to be trusted. If you keep talking, it won’t be long before you’re saying something really wrong. Prove you’re wise from the very start— just bite your tongue and be strong!”
PREACH. You may want to read these verses again! I put them together because sometimes a lot of little pills are hard to swallow and it’s better to just take them all at the same time! I am going to ask you some questions to think about to help you navigate through these verses.
- Who can you choose to love instead of replaying what they did to you over and over in your head?
- How well do you handle correction?
- Who can you choose to bite your tongue around, to make your relationship right again? Good friend, Elizabeth Hasselback, says, “May we never be so right that we are wrong with people.”
- Who do you need to be honest with?
Here’s something important to remember: Do the hard thing to be the right person.
I will end with the last verse in chapter 10.
Verse 32: “Words that bring delight pour from the lips of the godly, but the words of the wicked are duplicitous.”
Choose words that bring delight to those around you. It will make their day!

Moving right along with our Proverbs study, we are diving into chapter 9. There is so much in this chapter that is relatable and practical to our everyday living. Proverbs 9 contrasts the ways of wisdom with the ways of foolishness. We are given good guidelines to help us see the differences in the two paths. In these verses “wisdom” and “foolishness” are given human characteristics so we can easily understand them and what they can do for us.
Proverbs 9 (TPT) begins with these words about wisdom saying wisdom is (3) “inviting everyone to come and eat until they’re full.” This is a simple sentence and one you might not think holds much meaning, but think about inviting people into your space. There is something about this simple act that breathes confidence. It takes confidence to be an “inviter.” “Inviter” might not be a real word, but, for today, it means the one who does the inviting. Wisdom is a confident inviter. Think about that. If I invite someone into my home I have to feel confident that I can receive them and give them something meaningful to do in the time they are in my house. I want my house to be clean and the food to be good and the entertainment is valuable. Wisdom offers everyone something of value. It is confident in what it offers. When you hang out with wisdom, you can be confident that you have something valuable surrounding you.
I love how it says everyone can eat “until they’re full” in this house of wisdom. One of the things I always think about when I throw a party is what food I am going to serve and how much food I need so everyone is full. My go-to is pancakes with toppings like chocolate chips, blueberries, etc. I get so excited and feel quite confident in my menu because I know I have something to offer my friends that is good, fun, and filling. Plus, I know they can eat until they are full because I have prepared well. That confident feeling I have when I know I have plenty of chocolate chip pancakes is the some confident feeling I should have when I think about the wisdom God offers me.
Verses 4-6 says, “Whoever wants to know me and receive my wisdom, come and dine at my table and drink of my wine. Lay aside your simple thoughts and leave your paths behind. Agree with my ways, live in my truth, and righteousness you will find.”
Notice again the confidence spirit wisdom has as it calls for people to come and lay aside the simple thoughts they have had, because wisdom has something better to offer. And the invitation is open to whoever wants to come.
Verse 10 tells us, “The starting point for acquiring wisdom is to be consumed with awe as you worship Jehovah-God.” Other versions of the Bible say, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.” Either way it is clear that fearing God, being consumed in awe and wonder for Him and His ways, is the beginning point to being wise.
Lastly, in verse 12, “So it is to your advantage to be wise. But to ignore the counsel of wisdom is to invite trouble into your life.” This puts it pretty plan to us–wisdom is a wildly huge advantage in your life. Take its invitation! Don’t let it pass you by.
Now, let’s look at the foolish ways. For the most part, I think foolishness and the trouble it causes is pretty obvious. If I am being real with you, 99.9% of the foolish things I have done were done knowing it was not a smart idea. Like all the signs pointed to it being a bad idea, but I went ahead and did the foolish thing.
One time a friend and I thought it would be super cool to stay in a rental cabin in the mountains in the middle of nowhere. We thought we were being adventurous. While it sounded fun, there was a ring of crazy to the idea. Well, we proceeded to go to this cabin at 10:00 at night. I had spoken at an event so we couldn’t go any earlier. The drive up was sketchy, but we continued on!
When we got in the cabin there was pictures of bears all over the walls; there were bear blankets, bear lamp shades, bear wallpaper, and, for crying out loud, I think there were bear shower curtains. Everywhere we looked there were signs telling us there might be a bear in the area, still we decided to stay. Sure enough at 3:00 a.m. we both woke up to a BEAR scratching and growling on the outside of the cabin! Like a good pastor, I’m just going to ask someone to say, “THE SIGNS OF FOOLISHNESS ARE LOUD!”
Remember Proverbs gives human characteristics so we can understand the word better. One translations describes foolishness as a woman named Folly who is ignorant and doesn’t even know she is ignorant. Another translation says the woman folly is LOUD. Well, foolishness can definitely be loud, but we just push ahead because it also sounds fun. Right?
Let’s look at the TPT versions together because it really explains itself so well.
Proverbs 9:13-18
There is a spirit named Foolish, who is boisterous and brash; she’s seductive and restless. And there she sits at the gateway to the high places, on her throne overlooking the city. She preaches to all who walk by her who are clueless as to what is happening.
“Come home with me.” She invites those who are easily led astray, saying,
“Illicit sex is the best sex of all. Our secret affair will be sweeter than all others.”
Little do they know when they answer her call that she dwells among the spirits of the dead,
and all her guests soon become citizens of hell!
Like my fun adventure to the woods, foolishness calls us in with things that sound fun, good and pleasing, but notice that only those who are clueless listen to her foolish ways. If I would have listened to the wisdom that was trying to warn me, I probably would have turned around that night.
Wisdom and foolishness both offers sign. When we are faced with life choices, if we would just stop for a second to open our eyes so we can see the signs and let our ears to hear what the invitation is really saying, then we will be able to discern whether it is wisdom or foolishness knocking at our door.
Here are some things you can ask yourself:
When you walk into the door, will you leave full or will you face a bear scratching at your door?
“What did the signs say?”
“Am I really paying attention or am I just looking for fun?”
And finally…
Keep your focus on the Lord and the path to wisdom will open up to you.
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom!

PROVERBS 7 AND 8
There is nothing I can add to Proverbs 7 that would wake you up or explain anything better then the way that TPT version of the Bible lays it out. So, I encourage you, if you have been struggling with lust, pornography, sexual immorality, or adultery read it as your guide. Literally, thank you God for Proverbs! On that note we are going to pick up in Proverbs 8.
Proverbs 8 (TPT) is an absolutely beautiful illustration of what wisdom can do for your life. You will remember that Solomon is the writer of Proverbs. He is also the man who had the chance to receive anything he asked for from God and he chose wisdom. It’s important to remember this before reading the things that he writes about wisdom because more than anyone else in the world, Solomon knew the blessing the gift of wisdom can be. It’s hard for us to even understand being given this particular gift. Wisdom isn’t something we can always measure easily so how to we know we have it. We know Solomon had it because the Bible tells us he did. When we read Solomon’s account of the value of wisdom, we can know he lived with it daily. He walked in it and used it as he reigned as king.
Let’s dive in.
Proverbs 8:1-3 – “Can’t you hear the voice of Wisdom? From the top of the mountains of influence she speaks into the gateways of the glorious city. At the place where pathways merge, at the entrance of every portal, there she stands, ready to impart understanding, shouting aloud to all who enter, preaching her sermon to those who will listen. ‘I’m calling to you, sons of Adam, yes, and to you daughters as well. Listen to me and you will be prudent and wise. For even the foolish and feeble can receive an understanding heart that will change their inner being.’ ”
I have always loved the start of this chapter. I love how loud and confident wisdom in. It says that she stands, she shouts, and she preaches to those who will listen. She believes in what she is saying. She is not bothered by what people think, because she knows what she is saying is powerful. Have you ever felt confident about something you were saying or doing because you knew it was true? That is the feeling wisdom can give you. It’s a confidence in who you are and what you say. Wisdom lets you not worry about the reaction of others, and to not hide the truth that you know. Wisdom brings out the boldness in you and stirs up the passion.
I also love how this verse says even the foolish can receive it and it will change their inner most being! Wisdom is not just for the smart people or those with power or prestige; it is for everyone who seeks it.
v. 7 “For everything I say is unquestionably true, and I refuse to endure the lies of lawlessness— my words will never lead you astray.”
See! Wisdom knows she is leading people to a better life, so she makes sure she is heard! It is hard to be confident in life when you do not know what you stand for, who you are, or what you believe — but when you find truth, confidence follows. And when you follow wisdom, you will never go astray. Wow! That’s powerful stuff!
v. 13 “Wisdom pours into you when you begin to hate every form of evil in your life, for that’s what worship and fearing God is all about.”
PREACH! It makes sense that what we like, we pursue. We date people we like. We play sports we like. We listen to music we like. What we like, we go after. If someone likes things that are sinful, they will pursue them. This verse tells us when we begin to hate those things that cause us to sin, we will begin to run from them and pursue God. And pursuing God leads to wisdom.
v.32 “So listen, my sons and daughters to everything I tell you for no sign will bring you more joy than following my ways.”
v.34-36 “If you wait at wisdom’s doorway, longing to hear a word for every day, joy will break forth within you as you listen for what I’ll say. For the foundation of life pours into you every time that you find me, and this is the secret of growing in the delight and favor of the Lord. But those who stumble and miss me will be sorry they did! For ignoring what I have to say will bring harm to your own soul. Those who hate me are simply flirting with death!”
I love how it starts off by saying “if you wait at wisdom’s doorway.” Wisdom is not going to come looking for you, or knock on your door, you have to pursue it with patience and WAIT. Patience is such a beautiful thing and many times we miss the process of waiting at the doorway of wisdom because we do not know what it looks like to wait. This verse paints a beautiful picture of waiting and longing for wisdom’s words. In my growing relationship with Christian, I now long to hear his words each day. And his words bring me joy. That’s how we should be with our desire for wisdom. Pursuing wisdom by staying close to the Lord will bring us surpassing joy. Our father in heaven knows best and He knows everything about you and me! He wants to walk alongside of us and guide us. He wants us to experience joy.
The last verse is so real it almost seems too blunt, but God is a truth teller. It says “those who hate me (wisdom) are flirting with death.” This isn’t the only verse that talks about the troubles that follow foolishness. God’s desire is for us to have an abundant life. He’s the life-giver, but the foolish will bring their own troubles. Do the things of God and wisdom will be your reward.
We’re also told in this chapter that wisdom was with God when life began. If you’re seeking a meaningful life — seek wisdom. I hope you dive into these chapters even more! There is much WISDOM in it. 🙂
