Wow! What a miracle it is to even be alive right now. Like really y’all, sometimes I think we miss it. This life is a gift, and it’s no accident that you are exactly where you are right now. The college you’re at, the city you live in, the job you work at, and even the fact that you are reading this blog right now, all very much so on purpose. Nothing about you is random. God placed you exactly where you are, at this specific time, knowing exactly what He was doing. Family life is no different, you can be sure of this, God put you in your family on purpose.
My sister, Sarah, and I were asked to write about siblings. How to love the “brothers and sisters” in your life who are literally your brothers and sisters. And I’m not talking about the we’re related so “I love you” kind of love. I’m talking about real love.
God is love, love!
1 Corinthians 13 is all about selfless love. It’s not all that hard to say you love your family, but it is hard to actually love anybody. To really be good to them. To call out the gold, use kind words, be gentle with their hearts, or let’s be real, sometimes even to be nice to them at all. But why is it SO hard? Why is it that even in our very best efforts to be good loving people, we still aren’t enough? Because we aren’t enough! Wait, did I just say that? Yes! I, Gracie Tucker, on my own, in my flesh, do not have what it takes to be a loving person. Simply because I can not have the fruit of the spirit, without the Spirit! If we want to love anybody, especially our families, God has to be the source. God is love and God is the source of love! Something funny about mine and my sister’s blogs is that we wrote them completely separate but both pretty much ended up with this same conclusion… that the ONLY way to be a loving sister, or daughter, or even granddaughter is to be with Jesus first. To allow and invite the Holy Spirit in, to transform you, and to fill you.
“The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.” Galatians 5:19-25
I know the love I’m talking about may seem impossible right now. But wow, it’s not! Jesus makes this love possible. There’s no ten step, try harder plan… I write this as someone whose life was overflowing with the obvious acts of the flesh Paul is talking about, yet here I am writing about loving your family. The Holy Spirit changes everything! We just have to let Him.
I don’t “love” how I used to love. I don’t want the things I used to want anymore… I want the fruit of the Spirit. I want to live with real love, with joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Friends, let God love you. Because when you’re loved in that way, it’s not so hard anymore. It’s not so hard to be people who don’t miss it, to be people who yield to the Holy Spirit so the family’s we were born into, the jobs we work at, the cities we live in, and the colleges we attend feel the love of God. It was never supposed to be so hard because it was never supposed to be just you. By the Spirit we live, and by the Spirit we love! Thank you God for the Holy Spirit, thank you God for my family.
