Purpose is such a big topic in Christian culture.
We all want to know what our purpose is. What does God have for me?
Well, friend, let me tell you. God DOES have a PURPOSE for YOU.
Ephesians 2:10 says this, “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”
You are on this earth for a reason. You are not a mistake.
Jeremiah 1:5 says THIS (wow!!), “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you…”
God knows you inside and out. He knows your past, present and future.
But the more we walk with Him, the more we realize, our purpose, though He is GRACIOUS to give us one, is not about us. (1 Peter 2:9; Colossians 1:16) It’s about Him.
He WANTS to involve us in HIS purposes and plans, thus giving us a purpose and plan. WOW.
Which makes our purpose SO much greater than anything we could ever come up with on our own.
In what way would He allow me to be part of His plans for the world? What does He have for me?
We all share the same overarching purpose: To glorify God, to love God and to love others. But we were all creatively created by God to live out that big purpose differently.
I believe FIRMLY that we find our God-given purpose when we actively seek Him and walk in His ways (Proverbs 19:21).
If I walk in what He has for me TODAY, every day, I’ll end up EXACTLY where He has me.
If He and His Word are the light unto my path (“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” Psalm 119:105), I need to follow that light closely and as I do, I WILL be guided along the path He wants to lead me on.
Here are 10 things I can do DAILY to find my purpose:
1. Prioritize Bible reading daily. Whether it’s part of your morning routine, your lunch break or as you settle in for the night, reading God’s Word is the BEST way to grow a relationship with Him and seek Him. God’s Word (the Bible) is LITERALLY His Words written down for you.
2. Worship. I love putting on worship music while I run errands or clean or cook. I used to LOVE doing it too as I drove to school or work. Fill your mind and heart and ears with the things of God as you seek to find more of Him and His plans.
3. PRAY without ceasing throughout the day. Whether it’s a list of things to pray for you go through on a train or in the morning or at night or maybe sticky notes you have to look at and pray for throughout the day, PRAY.
- Pray for others.
- Pray for myself.
- Pray for God to guide me THIS DAY.
- Pray for opportunities and for boldness to take them.
- Pray about desires and passions and talents God has put on your heart.
4. Pursue, prayerfully, talents and passions in practical ways. Notice the talents, desires, and passions God has given you. He creatively created you the way you are for a reason. As you notice those things, prayerfully step into practicing or pursuing them. Start that blog or learn a new language or travel or cook for your neighbors. A friend of mine got REALLY into CrossFit and had such a heart for Muslims. She started working out through CrossFit regularly, became a CrossFit coach and for fun learned Arabic in college. The Lord then used both CrossFit, her love for Muslims and her learning this new language and opened up doors for her to move to the Middle East to serve refugees and women in the area. HOW incredible?! She could not have imaged that working out would open doors to serve in such impactful ways. But it’s something she saw she loved and she pursued it.
5. Involve myself in Christian community. The body of Christ is so important to spiritual growth and to the paths God has for us. Getting involved in Christian community allows for us to serve others (which we’ll talk more about) and for others to pour into and speak into our lives.
6. Serve in Christian community. SERVING in Christian community is a great way to uncover and live out our spiritual gifts. The more we serve and stay involved the more we see the ways we love to serve and what we’re gifted in – spiritually. Do we teach, are we hospitable, do we have the gift of prophecy or mercy? Most of the spiritual gifts are gifts that benefit the body of Christ. So, let’s get involved and serve.
7. Obey the purposes for you He already told you (aka His ways in His Word). We often ask ourselves “What does God have for me?” while we totally neglect the things He has for us that He already told us. Are we being obedient to the things He’s ALREADY called us to?
8. Glorify God in all you do. Simple and sweet. In everything you do, glorify Him. (1 Corinthians 10:31)
9. Love God in all you do. Simple and sweet. Let everything you do be done out of love for Him.
10. Love the people around you. Be intentional with others. Love others. Be kind to others.
Friend, as you seek Him for your purpose. I want to remind you of this verse we started out with:
Jeremiah 1:5 says THIS (wow!!), “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you…”
Seek the creator of your life and purpose to find out what you’re called to, what He has for you.
He is so faithful to guide and be a good Shepherd.
He WANTS to bring you into the plans He has for the world.
How can you start to implement these things into your life tomorrow or even TODAY?
Hi! I’m Megan – I am a new wife, daughter, sister and friend. I am a pastor’s kid. I am the creator of the Podcast and Online Ministry She Lives Purposefully. I’m also the owner of the Social Media Coaching business Meg Pam Social.
Through a personal tragedy, I was overwhelmed by the truth that God has a purpose for us & there is purpose in each season, day and minute. Knowing there was purpose, even in hard seasons, brought me from sorrow to joy and began to shape the way I live.
I created She Lives Purposefully with the hope of spreading the message of the importance and hope of purpose. My goal is to be able to encourage, equip and motivate women to live the way God calls us to live.
Here’s a little bit about me! I am a pastor’s kid whose parents are from Argentina. I’m semi-fluent in Spanish and I love iced chai tea lattes. My favorite book of the Bible right now is Esther and my favorite verse is Hebrews 4:14-16. My life goals are to love Jesus more and love others more. I believe kindness is an essential ingredient to every day. I believe each of our lives have purpose.
