Finding Rest In Uncertainty

Finding Rest In Uncertainty

Have you ever felt like the future is just full of questions marks? Maybe you’re waiting to hear back if you got that job, maybe you have to move out in a couple months but have no idea where you’re going yet, or maybe you’re waiting for that college to accept your application. The waiting and the unknown can feel stressful and scary but there is a way to find rest even when it all feels so uncertain. I’m in that season right now actually! My husband and I are in the process of buying a house since our lease on our apartment is ending in a couple months! We’ve put in offer after offer on houses we loved and none of the offers got accepted. It’s so easy for me to get caught up in the feelings of doubt when there is uncertainty.

But Jesus reminded of the story of Moses, the Israelites and Pharaoh. In Exodus we read how God had seen the oppression of His people, the Israelites in Egypt…

“And the LORD said: “I have surely seen the oppression of My people who are in Egypt, and have heard their cry because of their taskmasters, for I know their sorrows. So I have come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians, and to bring them up from that land to a good and large land, to a land flowing with milk and honey, to the place of the Canaanites and the Hittites and the Amorites and the Perizzites and the Hivites and the Jebusites.” (Exodus 3:7-8)

God made a beautiful promise that He would deliver the Israelites from their oppression in Egypt and take them to the promise land!! But here’s the really cool part, this is actually the same promise that God made to Abraham way back in Genesis that is about to be fulfilled!! Here is the promise God made to Abraham:

“Now the LORD had said to Abram: ‘Get out of your country, From your family and from your father’s house, to a land that I will show you. I will make you a great nation; I will bless you and make your name great; And you shall be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and I will curse him who curses you; And in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.'” (Genesis 12:1-3)

God was about to use Moses to take the Israelites to the promise land and fulfill the promise God had made YEARS ago! The beautiful thing about God is when He makes a promise He will fulfill it in His PERFECT timing.

But there were certainly some bumps along the way, like when Moses went to Pharaoh and told him to let Gods people go and Pharaoh said no. After that first encounter, Pharaoh actually increased the labor on the Israelites. Moses was even confused why Pharaoh didn’t let Gods people go like God said he would.

“So Moses returned to the LORD and said, ‘Lord, why have You brought trouble on this people? Why is it You have sent me? For since I came to Pharaoh to speak in Your name, he has done evil to this people; neither have You delivered Your people at all.'” (Exodus 5:22-23)

And God replied, “Then the LORD said to Moses, ‘Now you shall see what I will do to Pharaoh. For with a strong hand he will let them go, and with a strong hand he will drive them out of his land.'” (Exodus 6:1)

God responded to Moses with the reassurance of the promise He had made, even though it may have seemed nearly impossible for the Israelites and Moses at the time! I think it’s so cool how Moses RETURNED to the Lord after seeing the denied result of Moses’s first attempt to let the Israelites go, and in that time spent, God reminded Him of the promise saying, “he WILL drive them out of his land.”

Sometimes when God tells me a promise I almost expect it to be fulfilled immediately or pretty soon after God tells me, but that’s not always the case! It can be frustrating when things around me haven’t changed or maybe the circumstances even worsen! I find myself complaining or worrying, but this specific passage of Moses returning to God after he was denied, encouraged me to turn to God and His word and be reminded of the promise He’s made.

In the end after all the 10 plagues, the parting of the Red Sea (which seemed like the end for the Israelites as the Egyptians were closing in on them and they were staring at an open sea of water!) Gods mighty promise stood true and the sea was parted!!!

“Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea; and the LORD caused the sea to go back by a strong east wind all that night, and made the sea into dry land, and the waters were divided. So the children of Israel went into the midst of the sea on the dry ground, and the waters were a wall to them on their right hand and on their left. And the Egyptians pursued and went after them into the midst of the sea, all Pharaoh’s horses, his chariots, and his horsemen.” (Exodus 14:21-23)

Wow!! What a crazy story! The Israelites were finally free and on their way to the promise land just like God had said He would do! This reminds me of just how powerful God is, He can literally do anything! Nothing is too big or impossible for Him!

If you’re in a season of uncertainty and waiting, I want to encourage you in 5 of my favorite promises in the Bible:

1. God will fight for you.

“The LORD will fight for you, and you shall hold your peace.” (Exodus 14:14)

2. There is nothing that can separate you from His love for you.

“Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 8:37-39)

3. God gives us the gift of peace.

“Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” (John 14:27)

4. The peace of God will guard your heart.

“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:6-7)

5. God is with you wherever you go.

“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.” (Joshua 1:9)

Wow and to think this is just 5 promises God has made to us! The secret to finding rest in the midst of the unknown is resting in the promises of God. Even though life seems uncertain, scary, at times impossible, be encouraged that the same God who loved, fought for and delivered the Israelites is the same God who loves and is fighting for you. He is for you!
